Antill, J. (1996). Parents and Road Safety. Attitudes, knowledge and behaviours of parents of children aged 5 to 7 years. Road Safety Bureau, Roads and Traffic Authority, Sydney, NSW. Two hundred parents from different areas of Sydney (Australia) with children aged from 5 to 7 years were interviewed regarding their concerns about road safety of the local area, their road safety attitudes and behaviours, what they teach their children about road safety and its results, their understanding of young children’s limitations in traffic and their willingness to participate in road safety programs. The roads were seen by most parents as the greatest threat to their children’s physical safety. Nearly all children claimed to discuss road safety with their children ‘a lot’, which was more than for any other safety issue. Most parents do not allow their children to go to school alone until they are beyond the age range of this sample, but some are clearly exposed to major traffic hazards. Lessons were taught through practical experience and good examples being set by parents. [Shortened Author Abstract, MEO] | |||
