Carlin, J.B., Taylor, P. & Nolan, T. (1998). School based bicycle safety education and bicycle injuries in children: a case-control study. Injury Prevention, 4, 22-27.

A case-control study was undertaken in Melbourne to evaluate possible benefits of a school based bicycle safety education program on the risk of bicycle injury in children. 148 cases and 130 controls aged 9 to 14 years were interviewed face to face. Analysis showed no evidence of a protective effect and suggested a possible harmful effect of exposure to the bicycle safety course. The authors conclude that the educational interviewed did not decrease the risk of bicycle injury and may produce harm effects in some children perhaps due to inadvertent encouragement of risk taking or of bicycling with inadequate supervision.
