How to Make a Seatbelt

To make your own seatbelts, cut out paper or fabric into approximately 140cm lengths and 5cm width.  Cut out and decorate cardboard rectangles with a slit to use as a buckle and attach to the ‘seatbelt’.  Belt ends can also be sewn or glued together.

Other Resources to use when making seatbelts

• Stockings
• Black crepe paper
• Thick black elastic
• Black ribbon
• Strips of black material
• Used seatbelts (often obtained from mechanic/car wreckers)

Ideas for using seatbelts within the learning environment

Attach to chairs and have children dramatise traveling in the rear of a car wearing their seatbelts.
• Use as a visual aid when reading storybooks about traveling in the car.
• Use when playing ‘Musical Chairs’ – When children sit down, have them put on their seatbelts.
• Place in the dramatic play area and children can ‘Buckle up’ toys or themselves.
