What's New???

We are being evaluated... during 2008 there is an independent evaluation of the services we provide to the early childhood sector being conducted by ARTD on behalf of the New South Wales Centre for Road Safety within the Roads and Traffic Authority.

Your service will receive a written survey in July and may also be asked for a short interview. Please take this opportunity to let us know what we are doing well, and also how we can improve our services to early childhood services.

Our Kids and Traffic CD has been launched!!!!

Every children's service registered on our database will receive a FREE copy of the CD as soon as possible!!

The CD was launched by the Minister for Roads the Hon. Mr Eric Roozendaal on the 30th April 2008 at Banksia Cottage Child Care Centre, Macquarie University.

The Road Safety Songs and Rhymes for Young Children contains 16 imaginative and appealing road safety songs on a CD for early childhood staff and families to sing with young children.

According to the National Childcare Accreditation Council, music is an effective way of helping young children learn about their world and is an indication of good practice in early childhood programs. The Kids and Traffic CD uses tunes from popular, traditional songs to effectively convey key road safety messages to young children such as 'Buckle Me Up', 'Always Hold a Grown Up's Hand' and 'Always ask a Grown Up where it is Safe to Play'. A free copy of the CD will soon be distributed to all licensed children's services in NSW.

"The road safety songs and rhymes are a fun and interactive way for early childhood staff and families to help young children learn consistent road safety messages," explains Maureen Fegan, Program Director of the Early Childhood Road Safety Education Program.

"It is also a good reminder for adults to always take an active role in keeping our kids safe and to make road safety education an integral part of daily dialogue with young children."

The road safety Songs and Rhymes for Young Children CD is a valuable addition to the range of Kids and Traffic resources already available in children's services. In addition, a Kids and Traffic professional development workshop on using music to promote early childhood road safety is offered to all early childhood staff in NSW.

The goals of the Early Childhood Road Safety Education Program -- to improve young children's safety and develop safe community attitudes to road use --are of great importance to Macquarie University and the NSW Government's RTA Centre for Road Safety. As an active proponent of community services, Macquarie strongly supports partnerships between families and local communities for the promotion of public safety.
