Let’s start school safely in 2017

With many young children starting or returning to school this week it’s important to make sure everyone’s travelling safely whether they’re walking, travelling by car or catching the bus.

Transport for NSW, in consultation with Roads and Maritime Services, BusNSW and other bus stakeholders, has recently developed advice for selecting and reviewing informal school bus stop locations. There are thousands of these informal school bus stops in NSW (particularly in rural and regional areas) located on private property or alongside public roads, which are not sign posted.

Parents and carers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of children when catching a school bus. Some important safe bus travel tips for families are:IMG_9138

  • At the bus stop, hold hands and stand with your child, well away from the passing traffic. Never wait close to the kerb.
  • Your child is most at risk just after getting off the bus. To reduce this risk, always meet your child at the bus stop, never on the opposite side of the road.

The Kids and Traffic info sheet ‘Transporting children in buses‘ provides information for early childhood services on transporting children in buses.
